ART AND CRAFT IN THE CREATIVE ECONOMY OF THE NATURAL STATE
a workshop for public planners and leaders

The Arkansas Craft School is providing a significant workshop focusing on the support and economic impact of small creative industries. The workshop entitled “Art and Craft in the Creative Economy of the Natural State - a workshop for public planners and leaders” is scheduled for November 11-12, 2008, on the campus of the Ozark Folk Center in Mountain View, Arkansas.

The Arkansas Craft School has been deeply interested and involved in the Creative Economy study funded by the Rockefeller Foundation. As a result the Craft School is offering a two day workshop for Chamber of Commerce leaders, elected officials, and city, county, and state planners. The workshop is designed to address the creative economy in Arkansas as a primary industry in the region, assess the impact of the study on the creation of new jobs and tourism, and to guide public planners as they create programs to empower small creative craft businesses. Note that the presenters are outstanding leaders in the Art and Craft world of Arkansas: Sarah Butzen, Senior Associate with the Regional Technology Strategies Co. in North Carolina; Ginger Beebe, First Lady of Arkansas and a member of the Committee of 100; Joy Pennington, Executive Director of the Arkansas Arts Council; Dr. Ed Franklin, Executive Director of the Arkansas Association of Two Year Colleges; BobPest, President of Ozark Foothills Film Fest; Corky Baker, President of Stone County Iron Works; and others from the art and craft community of the state.

The workshop is funded in part by grants from the Regional Technology Strategies Co. who did the study through a grant from the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation and First Service Bank of Mountain View, AR. There is no charge to participants for the workshop. However, registration is required since the workshop can accommodate only 150 participants. Go to the website of the Arkansas Craft School for registration information. Continuing Education Credit will be available for those wishing it by the Arkansas Craft School and Ozarka College.
